“Don’t worry,” I said. “Dad says it’s probably extinct.”

But Hades had already moved on to the next case and was pressing his nose against the glass. “What’s that?”

“That’s Mr. Maj’s sorcerer’s staff,” Benji whispered, his voice full of awe. “Some say it’s THE most powerful magical conductor ever known.”

Hades’s eyes widened. “Really?”

“Yeah, but Dad doesn’t use it now,” I said quickly.

“I wish I could give it a spin,” Hades said, patting the glass as if he was looking for the opening.

“Sorry. The case is locked.” Broomsticks crossed! That staff is WAY too dangerous.

“Hey, didn’t you want to see the raindrop spell shield?” I asked. Something about the way he was looking at the staff made me a little uneasy.

But Hades didn’t move. “It looks like a plain old wooden stick,” he said. “Except that knot at the top is shaped like an eye. I swear it’s staring at me.”

“Maybe it is,” Benji said. “According to this book I read about Bloom’s dad…” He looked at me as he spoke, and his glasses steamed up. “This staff was carved from the wood of the Dragon’s Eye Tree.”
